Mapflow helps pinpoint €220 Billion assets at risk. Mapflow and Ordnance Survey partner to deliver a cost effective risk assessment solution.

London, September 2004. In the same week that the Environment Agency has released a new UK flood model, Mapflow has announced the launch of its flood and subsidence risk assessment solution for UK insurance organisations. For the first time, Mapflow's managed service approach puts accurate and affordable risk assessment solutions into the hands of the insurers.

Jonathan Guard, head of Mapflow's insurance business unit comments "the challenge for insurers has always been to provide a means of assessing risk which is fair and accurate. Using postcodes, and in particular postcode areas, is regarded as a crude tool for assessing the risk of a property. With the newest release of the Environment Agency flood model, combined with Ordnance Survey's AddressPoint database, there is now a cost effective solution to manage risk at individual household level".

However, while flood model availability is critical to the success of any solution, it is only one aspect: delivering this data as an accessible decision support tool to insurers is equally challenging. To date the lack of an efficient distribution channel for such data has been a constraint on the uptake of solutions.

Through its managed service, Mapflow is the first company to offer a web services enterprise solution to deliver this capability to insurers. Guard says "by combining our LocationAgent product suite with Ordnance Survey and third party risk model data, for the first time insurers can access a service to map individual address locations against known risk profiles. Uniquely, our managed service approach removes the headache for insurers associated with maintaining complex mapping and address databases, without compromising on accuracy or robustness."

Gavin Lewis Strategic Development Manager for the Insurance market at Ordnance Survey welcomed this new service to the UK market "it demonstrates yet again how the use of geographic data is underpinning key operational decisions within insurance organisations, following the lead which has been shown in other sectors such as transport and utilities."
